NEW EFFORT ALIGNS WITH BCDCOG’S PUSH TO USE ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY

CHARLESTON, S.C. (SEPT. 18, 2018) – The Charleston Regional Transportation

Authority (CARTA) has added a “live chat” feature to its website, providing an additional way for riders to connect with customer support online and in real-time. The new tool, which was recently soft-launched, has spurred a reduction in call volume and the use of static contact forms by riders.

“This feature is a key tool in improving the overall rider experience and providing an additional customer service outlet,” said CARTA board of directors chairman Mike Seekings. “Better technology is helping us lay the foundation for immediate and long-term transportation success in the Lowcountry.”

HOW IT WORKS:

  • The live chat option automatically appears in the bottom right of specific web pages, where customers most likely have questions: Home, FAQs, Contact, Fares and Passes, etc.

  • Customers click on the “Live Chat” button and enter name, phone and email (optional).

  • Customers enter the queue and a customer service representative selects and begins the chat session.

  • The Live Chat function is available during regular customer support hours, 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekends. During off hours, the system allows riders to submit emails that representatives will respond to promptly.

  • At end of every session, customers are offered a feedback survey.

CARTA mobile app partner, Transit, also released its highly anticipated 5.0 update with a refreshed home screen and new features.

NEW FEATURES INCLUDE:

  • Search Bar: Now located at the bottom of the screen for ease-of-use.

  • Instant ETAs: The Transit app now predicts where riders are most likely heading next and provides an instant arrival time to make planning a trip easy.

  • All-in-One Route Information: Tap any transit line on the home screen to see that route’s schedule, service alerts and map with vehicle locations and stop ETAs.

Transit is available for free download in the Google Play and the Apple App Store.

“Next in Tech” Index Ranks Charleston, SC 25th in Latest Startup Economy Index

New “Next in Tech” Index Identifies Cities Across the Nation Fostering Startup Creation and Job Growth

One million additional jobs per year can be created if pro-startup and entrepreneurship policies put in place

Washington, D.C. — TechNet, the national, bipartisan network of innovation economy CEOs and senior executives, and the Progressive Policy Institute (PPI) today unveiled groundbreaking research that shows that encouraging the creation of dynamic startups across the nation can create one million new jobs per year.

The study, conducted by Dr. Michael Mandel of the Progressive Policy Institute on behalf of TechNet, found growing evidence that dynamism is returning to our economy.? Net establishment formation is accelerating to pre-recession levels, showing that new companies are being formed and existing enterprises are expanding.? Additionally, 48% of net establishment formation is happening outside of the 35 largest metro areas, clearly indicating the dynamism is spreading.

To further examine this spread of dynamism and “Startup Economy” jobs throughout the nation, the study identifies 10 technology hubs and 25 “Next in Tech” cities with a thriving startup environment.? At the top of the “Next in Tech” index are Washington, D.C., Atlanta, Denver, Salt Lake City, Portland, Dallas, Raleigh-Durham, Worcester, and Philadelphia.

“Startup culture, which began in the garages of Silicon Valley, has spread across the nation,” said Linda Moore, president and CEO of TechNet.? “From Provo to Portland and Nashville to New Orleans, entrepreneurs are launching new ventures in the hope that they can become the next big thing.? Startups like these are the economic engine that drives job creation.? In 2014, companies in their first five years of life created 2.2 million jobs, while firms older than five years created only 450,000 jobs.? That’s remarkable, and it means that if we put the right policies in place to support startups, we can create one million new, good-paying jobs each year.”

“Policymakers on the national, state, and local level must pay close attention to startups — encouraging their formation and removing the obstacles to their growth,” said Dr. Mandel.? “Put simply, this requires better regulatory policy, improved access to talent, and better access to markets and capital.? Such startup friendly policies do not necessarily require large amounts of money.? They do, however, require governments to do things differently than before.? We need one million additional jobs annually from young firms.? It won’t be easy — but it’s the only way that the U.S. can grow.”

“These long established industries that are transforming and becoming redefined by emerging technologies are not just based on the coasts, but are across America — in every city and corner of the country,” said Terry Howerton, co-founder and CEO of TechNexus Venture Collaborative.? “The industry and domain expertise to apply new technology — and the jobs created by this disruption — are best suited for the communities where today’s startups and corporations exist, everywhere.? That’s why smart public policy at the federal, state, and local levels is critical to keeping these new jobs distributed around the country.”

Startup Agenda

The study concludes that the goal of startup policy should be to spur the creation of an additional one million jobs in young firms each year.? This requires the adoption of a multi-pronged federal, state, and local “Startup Agenda” including:

  • Improving access to capital through updated rules that make crowdsourcing easier and put in place tax incentives to encourage investment in?early stage, high growth?local?companies.
  • Fostering access to talent by ensuring that?STEM and?computer science is taught in every school in America, developing worker retraining programs, and reforming high-skilled immigration policies that encourage entrepreneurship.
  • Opening up access to markets through trade policies that encourage U.S. exports.
  • Instituting a pro-innovation regulatory and fiscal policy and reducing the burden of regulation?and taxation?on small companies.

About TechNet
TechNet is the national, bipartisan network of technology CEOs and senior executives that promotes the growth of the innovation economy by advocating a targeted policy agenda at the federal and 50-state level.? TechNet’s diverse membership includes dynamic startups to the most iconic companies on the planet and represents more than two million employees in the fields of information technology, e-commerce, advanced energy, biotechnology, venture capital, and finance.? TechNet has offices in Washington, D.C., Silicon Valley, San Francisco, Sacramento, Austin, Boston, Seattle, Albany, and Tallahassee.?

About PPI
The Progressive Policy Institute is a catalyst for policy innovation and political reform based in Washington, D.C.? Its mission is to create radically pragmatic ideas for moving America beyond ideological and partisan deadlock.? PPI is developing fresh proposals for stimulating U.S. economic innovation and growth; equipping all Americans with the skills and assets that social mobility in the knowledge economy requires; modernizing an overly bureaucratic and centralized public sector; and, defending liberal democracy in a dangerous world.

Something is Happening Here in Charleston, South Carolina – Technology Renaissance

By Mark A. Leon

Yesterday, in front of nearly 15,000 fans, the Citadel Bulldogs Football program went 9-0 and clinched the Southern Conference in remarkable fashion.? Coming back from ten with less than 5 minutes remaining and winning in overtime, this was a game mapped out by the best sports screenwriters combining the drama of “Hoosiers” and “Miracle”

In the fog of this foodie paradise, where coastal living is a defined by dining, drinking and recreation, something big is happening in Charleston.

In the 2015 School System Quality Ranking, South Carolina ranked 47th in the US.? In 2013, 67% of state high schoolers graduated and only 43.2% of students with disabilities completed their degree.? In the category of highest levels of obesity, South Carolina ranks 41st, graduation rates, 36th, cancer deaths, 38th, diabetes, 43rd, violent crime, 4th and smoking 43rd according to 2015 rankings.

As of November 6, 2016, (Traffic Accidents and Fatalities in South Carolina):

  • Fatal Crashes for 2015:? 782 / Fatal Crashes for 2016: 766
  • Persons Killed from Crashes in 2015:? 839 / Persons Killed from Crashes in 2016: 833

We still have 2 months remaining in the year and we are on pace to shatter the 2015 records.

South Carolina has its challenges, but something big is happening in Charleston.

Last month 30 aspiring start-ups participated in the 2016 Charleston Angels Conference meeting with investors to vy for a prize of $100,000.? These is a pioneer program for Charleston highlighting some of the best young tech companies in the Southeast.? With the partnership of local investors and a wealth of potential seat money, this even can launch a promising future for some young startups.

In 2015, Charleston Magazine published “The Rise in Silicon Harbor” while in 2015 Huffington Post released, “Charleston, South Carolina Outpaces the Nation in Tech Growth”.? Both outlined a renaissance in technology and professional expertise taking shape in the Low country.? This unprecedented birth of human capital solutions has paved the way for a new look and feel for Charleston.

DigSouth is on a mission and their goal is very clear, bring technology to the Southeast.? This is an area that traditionally has not been a technology focal point.? It isn’t Silicon Valley (Palo Alto/San Francisco), New York, Chicago, Minneapolis or Austin.? The stigma in the South traditionally has been low education standards, limited professional and tech career opportunities and sub-standard quality of life.? Now there are companies, organizations and visionaries that are seeing that this reputation is changing and swiftly.

CharlestonWorks is a website that highlights the technology jobs in the Charleston area.? Its goal is to bring talent locally and across the country to the Southeast to harness and growth our tech infrastructure.? Take a look and see the diverse range of opportunities available right in your backyard.? Currently, there are 341 companies with current technology job openings.? This is truly a feat and a testimony to the growth in tech space.

In the last 10 years, we have witnessed the evolutionary transformation of Charleston witnessing the increase and expansion of medical services, the rise of Boeing, BMW and Volvo, expansion of BenefitFocus, PeopleMatter bringing corporate life to downtown Charleston, monetized apps being released and small technology firms coming into their own.

Charleston remains a historic Southern coastal area with a rich tradition of hospitality, warmth, dining and leisure, but a new seed is being planted.

Six years ago, I had personal challenges scheduling meetings because most friends and network connections wanted to meet during the day.? For some time, I felt like I was the only one in Charleston with traditional work hours.? That thinking is changing.? We are seeing great thinkers home grown who are taking risks and converting business plans into reality right here at home.

The latest 2016 US News and Worlds Report ranks The Citadel #1 and College of Charleston #4 in Public Schools South Region.? With these two strong programs and our surrounding schools focus on technology skills, coding camps and meetups, Charleston is starting to make a national name for itself and very comfortable to be competing with Silicon Valley step for step.

We may not have the deep seed money to compete with the Yelps and Instagrams of the world, but we are making waves in the tech sector and I see us being a player for a long time.
